Ground Shaped to Shed Water and Stay Usable

Land grading sets where the rain goes once it lands on your ground. A home site or a freshly cleared lot left in humps and hollows holds water in every dip. Ruts and washes cut deeper with each hard rain, and wet field edges stay too soft to cross. On Sharkey clay, which takes in water very slowly, the shape of the surface decides how long water sits.

Our compact track loader cuts the high ground and carries that dirt into the low ground. A finish pass then smooths the surface so rain runs off. Land grading sits inside our site preparation and dirt work. When the water needs a ditch or a pipe to leave, we add drainage and culvert installation.

The Problem: Uneven Ground on Clay That Drains Slowly

The soil under a tract controls how long rain stays on top. USDA describes Sharkey clay, on the Mississippi River floodplain, as very slowly permeable. From December through April in normal years, the top of its surface layer stays saturated. When it dries out, the same clay cracks open at the surface.

Richland Parish holds both clay and silt loam. Waxy clay runs along Bayou Lafourche, while the Macon Ridge in the east half is mainly silt loam. On either soil, a dished or uneven surface collects water instead of shedding it.

Cleared ground is rarely smooth ground. Heavy clearing can leave stump holes and ruts behind. On a slope, rain with no shaped path cuts its own wash, and each storm digs it deeper.

Our Solution: Rough Grade First, Then the Finish Pass

One national cost guide defines land grading as leveling the ground or contouring the slope so water drains. The rough pass moves the most dirt. The bucket shaves the humps down and fills the hollows with what it cuts.

Where a cut goes below the topsoil, the topsoil comes off first and waits in a pile. When the shape is set, it goes back over the top. If the tract runs short of dirt, a local supplier delivers fill. We spread it in thin lifts and pack each lift with the tracks.

The finish pass is lighter and smooths the top few inches. On a home site, the finished grade has to carry water away from the foundation. Louisiana's residential code wants a drop of at least 6 inches over the first 10 feet. Lawn-scale work around a house, such as low spots and topsoil, is our yard leveling service.

From the Free Estimate to the Finished Grade

The free on-site estimate comes first. It notes where water stands after a rain and picks the outlet the water will follow off the tract. From there we size the ground to shape and any fill to order.

Wet clay sets the calendar, so cuts on Sharkey ground wait for drier weeks. We talk timing on the estimate.

Our grading machine is a compact track loader that runs a bucket and a grapple. It suits home sites, barn sites, lots and field edges. Big cut and fill jobs, long slopes and laser leveling of row-crop fields need a dozer or a laser-scraper crew. We tell you when a job is one of those.

What Land Grading Does for Your Property

Graded land sheds a hard rain, so you can get back on it sooner. A home or barn site that drains keeps water from collecting against the building. A cleared tract with a finished grade also reads as ready-to-use ground when it comes time to sell.

What is the difference between rough grading and finish grading?
Rough grading moves the most dirt. One national cost guide describes it as removing slopes or contouring land for drainage. Finish grading is the last pass, and it smooths only the top few inches of soil. If your ground needs both, the heavy pass comes first and the smoothing pass comes last.
How much does land grading cost?
One national cost guide puts land grading at $500 to $5,000 on average. It ties the price to size, soil type, slope and the fill dirt needed. By the square foot, the guide lists finish grading at $0.40 to $1.00 and rough grading at $1 to $2. A full acre runs $17,400 to $43,600, and a quarter-acre home lot $4,400 to $10,900. The guide adds that most residential grading projects are a quarter acre or less. On a big tract, the area that actually gets shaped is what counts. Those are published national ranges. Our Louisiana land grading cost guide breaks them down. The estimate for your ground is free and on site.
What permits or notices apply before grading starts?
It depends on the site and the size of the job. Before any digging with a machine, state law wants Louisiana 811 notified at least 48 hours ahead. Weekends and holidays are left out of that count. When grading opens up at least one acre but less than five, LDEQ's small construction stormwater permit usually applies. Fill placed in a wetland or creek can need a Section 404 permit first, unless the work is exempt. We check what applies before we start, and our Louisiana land clearing permit guide has more on wetlands.
Can you level a whole crop field?
Not with our track loader. Laser leveling a row-crop field takes a laser-scraper crew. Big cut and fill work or long slopes take a dozer. Whole-field work has its own USDA conservation standards. One, precision land forming, is the regrading of a field to remove surface irregularities. Our grading fits pasture and field edges, wet corners and washed or rutted ground. After a natural disaster, USDA's Emergency Conservation Program can cost-share re-leveling farmland, up to 75 percent, when Congress funds it.
Can you grade a lot right after it is cleared or mulched?
Yes. One national cost guide notes that land must be cleared before leveling, so clearing comes first. On brushy or wooded ground, that first step is often forestry mulching. Stumps in the way get ground down through our stump grinding work before the cut. Then the rough and finish passes follow on the same job.
Do you grade around a new shop or barn?
Yes. We shape the ground around the building so rain runs away from its walls and doors. The approach gets an even, track-packed grade for trucks and trailers. The pad under the slab is a separate job, covered under house pads and building pads. The lane out to the building falls under roads, driveways and access.
Who brings the fill dirt, and who tests compaction?
A local supplier delivers fill dirt, in the amount the estimate works out. We spread and shape it, then track-pack it one thin lift at a time. Where a builder needs compaction tests, the builder's engineer specifies them and checks the results.
