Yard Leveling · Rayville, LA

Smooth Ground That Falls Away From the House

Yard leveling starts with the low spots, where water stands after every hard rain. Tire ruts from a truck or trailer fill with water too. The puddle that matters most is the one right beside the house. Humps and dips also make every mowing a rough ride.

We level yards with a compact track loader and bucket, the same machine behind our skid steer services. We cut high spots down to fill low ones and shape the ground to fall away from the house. Extra topsoil or fill arrives on your supplier's truck, and we spread, shape and track-pack it. Yard leveling is the home-lot side of our site preparation and dirt work.

The Problem: Low Spots, Ruts and Water Beside the House

Rain shows every low spot in a yard. One national cost guide lists pooling water and spongy soil in low areas as signs a yard needs work. It also lists grass cut unevenly over peaks and dips in the lawn.

How long the water stays depends on the soil under the grass. Along Bayou Lafourche in Richland Parish, the ground is waxy clay. On the Mississippi River floodplain, Sharkey clay is poorly drained and takes in water very slowly. Up on the Macon Ridge, in the east half of the parish, yards sit mainly on silt loam.

Water beside the house is the spot to fix first. When a yard sits flat or tips toward the slab, rain runs to the house instead of away. Louisiana's residential code calls for at least 6 inches of fall in the first 10 feet from the foundation.

Our Solution: Cut the High Spots and Fill the Low Ones

A compact track loader with a bucket does this work. We cut the humps down and carry that dirt into the dips. One cost guide calls this cut and fill: dirt comes off the high areas to build up the low ones. When the yard runs short of dirt, the topsoil or fill from your supplier makes up the rest.

Fill goes down in thin layers, and the tracks pack each layer before the next one. Next to the house, we shape the ground so it falls away from the foundation. Where a wall, a lot line or a slope blocks that fall, the code calls for drains or swales. Swales are part of our drainage and culvert installation work.

The finished yard is rough leveled and ready for seed or sod. One cost guide advises seeding or laying sod right after leveling, to hold the soil in place. Planting is yours or your landscaper's part of the job.

What to Expect on a Yard Leveling Job

We level yards on home lots around Rayville, Monroe, West Monroe and Ruston. Each job starts with a free on-site estimate. We look at where the rain runs now and where it should go. Then we work out how much topsoil or fill to order, and you book the delivery with your supplier.

The loader comes in on a trailer, and it needs a gate or gap wide enough to reach the yard. Ask your supplier to drop the pile near the low spots, where the truck will not sink. Clear vehicles and yard furniture off the area before we arrive.

A few yard jobs outgrow a track loader. One cost guide notes that removing a steep hill requires heavy equipment. Some jobs need a dozer, excavator or roller crew, and we tell you when that is the case.

What a Level Yard Does for Your Property

A yard that drains is usable sooner after rain, and the mower runs smooth across it. Water moves away from the slab instead of collecting beside it. One national cost guide says buyers with children typically prefer houses with level backyards.

Is yard leveling the same as yard grading?
They overlap. One national cost guide calls leveling a form of grading that creates a smooth, even surface. A yard beside a house should not end up dead flat, though. Louisiana's residential code says lots shall be graded to drain surface water away from foundation walls. So we smooth the yard and keep its fall away from the house.
How much does yard leveling cost?
One national cost guide puts leveling a small lawn at $500 to $1,000. An average backyard runs $1,000 to $5,000 in the same guide. It prices regrading one side of a house at $500 to $1,000, and the whole house at $1,000 to $3,000. Topsoil and fill are bought separately, at $10 to $50 and $5 to $25 per cubic yard in that guide. A second national guide puts the average at $2,175, with most homeowners paying $1,021 to $3,330. Our land grading cost guide for Louisiana has more detail, and your on-site estimate is free.
Can you level my lawn with sand?
No. Sand topdressing of a lawn is lawn-care work, not ours. A university extension guide calls topdressing a lawn maintenance practice: a thin layer of material over an established lawn. The same guide says sand belongs on a lawn only when the native soil is sandy. A lawn-care company is the right call for it. Our part is the bigger dips and humps, where the ground under the grass has to move.
Where does the topsoil or fill dirt come from?
You buy it from a local supplier, and their truck drops it at the yard. We spread it, shape it and track-pack it with the loader. One national cost guide says a cubic yard of topsoil covers 81 square feet at 4 inches deep. The same guide says a cubic yard of fill dirt covers 55 square feet at 6 inches deep. We work out how much to order with you on the estimate. Topsoil and river bottom sand may carry weed seeds, an extension guide warns, so ask your supplier first.
Can you level a spot for a shed, a slab or a playset?
Yes. We cut the spot down to its low side where we can, and fill and pack it where we cannot. One cost guide says a concrete patio needs a base of sand or crushed stone over a level dirt pad. We build the level pad, and your concrete contractor sets the base. The same guide says a playset needs 6 feet of open, level space on all sides. A slab for a new home is a bigger job, covered on our house pads and building pads page.
When is the best time to level a yard, and how long does it take?
One national cost guide names spring or fall during dry weather as the best time. It warns that rain can wash loose topsoil away. In that guide, most yard leveling takes 3 days to a week, and small jobs as little as a day. Clay sets its own schedule here: Sharkey clay drains poorly after rain and cracks open at the surface when dry. We plan the work days around the ground and talk timing on the estimate.
Do you call 811 before leveling a yard?
Yes, whenever the bucket cuts into the ground. Louisiana 811 gets our notice at least 48 hours ahead, as state law requires before mechanized digging. Weekends and holidays do not count toward those hours. Show us any line you buried yourself, like a sprinkler pipe or a dog fence wire. Permit rules depend on the city or parish, so we check them before starting.
