One Track Loader for a Whole List of Jobs

Most calls for skid steer services start with a list instead of one big job. There is a storm brush pile, a rutted lane, a heap of rock and a fence line lost to briars. Each job feels too small to hire out alone, so the list sits. Meanwhile the brush spreads and the ruts get deeper.

We work that list across Northeast Louisiana with a compact track loader, the tracked member of the skid steer family. Its grapple and bucket handle debris and dirt, and its forestry mulching head handles brush. It is the everyday side of our site preparation and dirt work. The same loader spreads and packs the fill for a new house pad.

What We Handle

  • Grapple cleanup of brush piles
  • Storm limb and debris piling
  • Mulching head brush clearing
  • Fence line and shooting lane clearing
  • Spreading delivered dirt and rock
  • Driveway and lane crowning
  • Pad grading and track-packing
  • Food plot disking and mowing

The Problem: Small Jobs Pile Up on Soft Ground

Put a wheeled machine on wet ground and it cuts ruts. Extension soil guides warn that driving on wet soil causes rutting, slipping and deep compaction. Each pass sinks the tires deeper, and the ruts hold water. The soft spot grows, and the job list gets longer.

On the floodplain side of Richland Parish, waxy clay runs along Bayou Lafourche. The Macon Ridge, on the parish's east side, is mainly silt loam. Near Tallulah, the Mississippi River floodplain holds heavy clay such as Sharkey. USDA soil scientists describe Sharkey as very slow to drain, on slopes mostly under 1 percent.

That clay sets the calendar. In normal years its top layer stays saturated from December through April, so winter work takes planning.

Our Solution: A Track Loader Matched to Each Job

A compact track loader rides on two long tracks instead of four tires. Extension guides list tracks as a way to spread the load over a larger footprint, which cuts compaction. Tracks also grip better than tires.

The grapple picks up limbs and storm debris and piles them where you want them. It does most of the lifting in cleanup after a storm. The forestry mulching head grinds brush and small trees in place to open fence lines and shooting lanes. On bigger tracts, the same work leads into full land clearing and reclamation.

The bucket spreads dirt and rock that a supplier's truck delivers. We shape and track-pack it, whether that means crowning a lane or building up a gravel driveway. The tractor, with its disc harrow and rotary cutter, handles field work such as food plot ground prep.

When a Job Needs a Dozer or Excavator Crew

Some jobs need a dozer or excavator crew, and we tell you when that is the case. Digging a pond or a deep trench calls for an excavator or a dozer. Heavy push work calls for a dozer. Moving material off the property takes a dump truck, which is a separate hire.

Ditch shaping and setting a driveway culvert usually fit the loader. A crossing with a deep cut or a large pipe may need an excavator crew instead. The details are on our drainage and culvert installation page.

What to Have Ready Before We Unload

Start with the job list, written down and ranked, so the most important work gets done first. We go over it with you on the free on-site estimate. We trailer the loader in, so we need a firm way in for a truck and trailer. Room to unload and turn around helps.

If dirt or rock is coming, choose the dump spot before the truck arrives. A spot close to the work, on firm ground, saves carrying time. If the job breaks ground, utilities get marked through Louisiana 811 first.

Call (318) 235-7597

What is the difference between a skid steer and a track loader?
They are the same family of machine. A skid steer rolls on four tires, and a compact track loader rides on two tracks. Tracks spread the load over a larger footprint, so they suit soft ground better. Plenty of people call this bobcat work, whatever the brand. Ours is a John Deere compact track loader.
How much do skid steer services cost?
National cost guides put a skid steer and operator at $100 to $300 an hour, often with a one-day minimum. The same guides list forestry mulching with an operator at $1,000 to $2,500 a day. Some companies add a $150 to $300 mobilization fee for setup. Guides also price whole projects by the job. Our land clearing cost per acre guide and Louisiana gravel driveway cost guide break those down. Your on-site estimate is free.
Can you work when the ground is wet?
Often, because tracks spread the load and grip better than tires. Extension soil guides still warn that driving on wet soil causes ruts and deep compaction. So in the wet months, some jobs wait for a dry spell. We tell you which ones on the estimate.
Do you haul away brush and debris?
Not off the property. The grapple piles brush and limbs where you want them, and the mulching head can grind brush in place. Taking debris away needs a dump truck, which is a separate hire. When a truck is coming, we build the piles where it can load them.
Can you spread dirt or gravel that was delivered?
Yes. A local supplier or quarry truck delivers the fill or rock, and we spread it and track-pack it. On a lane or drive, we shape the rock with a crown so water runs off both sides. Tell us what is coming and when, and we plan the day around the delivery.
Do you call 811 before track loader work?
Yes, whenever the job breaks ground. Louisiana law requires notice to Louisiana 811 at least 48 hours before mechanized excavation, not counting weekends and holidays. That gives utilities time to mark their lines. Point out anything you buried yourself, such as a water line to a camp.
What areas do you cover for skid steer work?
We work out of Rayville across Northeast Louisiana: Richland, Ouachita, Lincoln, Morehouse, Franklin and Madison parishes. East Carroll, West Carroll, Union, Caldwell and Jackson parishes are in the area too. Across the state lines, we also cover Vicksburg and Natchez in Mississippi and Crossett in Arkansas.
