A Gravel Driveway That Survives Louisiana Weather

Most gravel driveways fail the same way: rock spread on soft, unprepared ground. It pumps in the wet, ruts under a loaded truck, and washes with every hard rain — so the owner keeps buying gravel for a drive that was never built right underneath.

Big Cypress builds gravel driveways across Rayville, Monroe, Ruston, Bastrop and across Northeast Louisiana from the sub-grade up — prepared base, the right rock, a crowned surface that sheds water, shaped ditches, and properly sized culverts at the entrance and crossings. It is part of our full roads, driveways and access work, and pairs with site prep when you are opening a new homesite.

The Problem: Rock on Soft Ground

Gravel is the surface, not the structure. Without a prepared sub-grade and base, the ground below pumps water up through the rock, the surface ruts and scatters, and the drive slowly sinks into the yard. Add a flat profile with nowhere for water to go, and every rain undoes another month of driving.

Our Solution: Build the Structure, Then the Surface

We establish the sub-grade, build the right road base for your soil and traffic, and top it with the right crushed stone for a smooth, packed driving surface. The drive gets a crown so water sheds, ditches alongside so runoff has somewhere to go, and a properly sized culvert at the entrance so the road ditch keeps flowing. On soft or low ground we build up first — so the drive does not pump and rut.

Existing driveways that keep washing or rutting usually need the base and drainage fixed, not more rock — we re-establish the structure so the repair actually lasts.

What a Real Driveway Is Worth

An all-weather driveway is dependable access in every season — and it is first-impression value. It frames the homesite, carries loaded trucks and trailers without complaint, and tells every visitor, appraiser, and future buyer that the property is built right from the road in. For the cost of doing it once correctly, you stop paying for it every year.

FAQ

Gravel Driveways Questions, Answered

Common questions about gravel driveways across Northeast Louisiana. Don’t see yours? Give us a call — we’re happy to help.

Call (318) 235-7597

What kind of gravel do you use for driveways?
It depends on the use and the ground. A typical build uses a coarser base rock topped with a finer crushed stone or limestone for a smooth, packed driving surface. We will recommend the right material and depth for your traffic and soil on the estimate.
Can you fix a driveway that keeps washing out or rutting?
Yes — and usually the fix is in the base and the drainage, not just adding more rock. We re-establish the sub-grade, crown the surface to shed water, shape the ditches, and add a culvert if a crossing needs one, so the repair actually lasts.
Do you install entrance culverts?
Yes. We set properly sized culverts at driveway entrances so the road ditch keeps flowing and your entrance stays solid — and at any ditch or wet-weather crossing along the drive.
How long does a new gravel driveway take?
Most residential driveways are built in a day or two once material is scheduled — longer for long lanes, wet ground, or extensive shaping. We will give you a clear timeline with the estimate.
How do I get a driveway estimate?
Call or send the details — length, ground conditions, and what will drive on it — and we will look at the route and give you a free, no-obligation estimate.
